Overview

AJ Bell is a UK investment platform for DIY investors, not a trading broker. It's a good pick if you want to hold shares, funds and ETFs inside an ISA or a pension and keep costs down, and less useful if you want leverage, CFDs or forex, since there aren't any. The company started in Manchester in 1995, is listed on the London Stock Exchange, and its dealing arm, AJ Bell Securities Limited, is regulated by the FCA (155593).

Accounts and costs

You can open a Stocks and shares ISA, a SIPP, a Lifetime ISA, a Junior ISA or a plain Dealing account. Opening any of them is free. Regular investing starts at £25 a month by Direct Debit with no dealing commission, and ISA account fees on ETFs are capped at £3.50 a month. One-off online share deals cost around £5 each in recent reviews, and investing in foreign currencies carries a 0.75% FX fee. There's no published lump-sum minimum on the AJ Bell site.

Platforms and markets

Everything runs through AJ Bell's own website and app. You can buy UK shares and shares listed on 24 overseas markets, including the US, Japan and Canada, plus thousands of funds, investment trusts, ETFs, bonds and gilts. Leveraged and short ETPs are available after an online knowledge test. There's no demo account.

Money in and out

You fund by Direct Debit, a single payment from your bank, or by transferring an existing account across. Standard withdrawals go to a UK bank account in your name, cost nothing and usually arrive in 1 to 3 working days. A faster CHAPS payment costs £25 plus VAT. Client assets are ring-fenced and covered by the FSCS up to £85,000.

What traders say

Scores from the sites traders use, and our summary of what they're saying, checked 6 October 2026.

AJ Bell is one of the best-reviewed investment platforms in the UK. It holds 4.8 on Trustpilot from about 17,200 reviews, and the count has grown steadily through 2026. UK personal finance forums are more measured: people tend to call it a solid, fairly priced mid-market choice rather than the cheapest option.

What traders like

  • Smooth transfers. Many recent Trustpilot reviews thank the transfer team for moving ISAs and pensions in without fuss and for keeping people updated.

  • Easy to use. Reviewers often call the website and app clear and logically laid out.

  • Helpful support. Many say queries were resolved quickly and politely.

  • Range and household features. On Reddit, users like the wide fund and share range and being able to link a spouse's accounts in one view.

Common complaints

  • Withdrawal checks. Some reviewers say withdrawals were held for source-of-funds or security checks, or needed a call-back, and that they were not told why until they chased. A 2022 Reddit user describes a withdrawal sent to the wrong place.

  • Charges compared with rivals. Reddit users point out that dealing charges and the custody fee can make AJ Bell dearer than some platforms for small portfolios or plain index trackers. A few find the charges hard to understand.

  • Phone waits at busy times. Some older Trustpilot reviews describe long queues to reach customer services.

  • Paperwork for pensions. Some MoneySavingExpert forum users find the SIPP drawdown forms long and inflexible.

Recently

  • August 2026: MoneySavingExpert forum users discuss AJ Bell as a single SIPP for drawdown, with mixed views on its forms.

  • September to October 2026: recent Trustpilot reviews keep praising transfers. One describes an ISA withdrawal in late September that left the account but was then held for source-of-funds checks.
