## Overview

Vanguard is the US investment giant that brought index funds to ordinary investors back in 1976, and its brokerage is built around that idea. It suits people who want to buy low-cost funds and ETFs and leave them alone for years. It's not a trading shop and doesn't pretend to be one. The brokerage runs through Vanguard Marketing Corporation, a FINRA member broker-dealer, and The Vanguard Group is registered with the SEC as an investment adviser. It mainly serves US clients and doesn't accept UK residents.

### Accounts and costs

You can open a regular brokerage account, a Roth or traditional IRA, a 529 college savings plan or a Cash Plus account for spare cash. There's no minimum balance to open a brokerage account, and stocks and ETFs trade commission free online. Most Vanguard mutual funds need $3,000 to get in, or $1,000 for target retirement funds. There's a $25 annual service fee, but signing up for e-delivery waives it. Phone-assisted trades and some bond trades carry extra charges.

### Platforms and markets

You invest through Vanguard's website and its iOS and Android apps. They're simple by design, and you can't connect TradingView or any third-party trading platform. You can buy stocks, ETFs, Vanguard and other mutual funds, options, CDs and bonds. Vanguard stopped allowing purchases of leveraged and inverse funds in 2019, and there's no crypto or futures.

### Money in and out

Money moves by ACH bank transfer or wire from accounts in your own name. ACH deposits and withdrawals are free and usually land in a couple of business days. Outgoing wires cost $10 unless you have at least $1 million with Vanguard.

Vanguard has very few reviews on the usual review sites for a firm its size, and the ones that exist are mostly complaints. Its US Trustpilot page has only about 43 reviews and our sources show no current score for it. SmartCustomer shows 2.8 from 44 reviews, and Forex Peace Army lists Vanguard with no reviews yet. The fuller picture comes from Reddit's r/Bogleheads and the Bogleheads forum, where long-term index investors discuss it at length: they like the funds and the ownership structure, and they dislike the website and the service.

### What traders like

- **Low-cost funds and the ownership model.** Reddit users often say Vanguard's investor-owned structure keeps costs down and is why they stay or recommend it to new investors.
- **Fine for buy and hold.** Several say the platform does what a long-term investor needs, and some see its plainness as a guard against overtrading.
- **Good experiences on the phone.** Some long-time customers say calls were handled well when they needed them.

### Common complaints

- **A dated website and app.** The most common complaint on Reddit is a clunky interface, missing performance data and features that other brokers have had for years.
- **Withdrawal restrictions on new accounts.** Bogleheads forum threads describe new accounts blocked from online withdrawals to the linked bank for long periods, with each one needing a phone call to approve.
- **Slow, inconsistent service.** Trustpilot, SmartCustomer, BBB and ComplaintsBoard reviewers describe long holds, conflicting answers and repeated hand-offs, especially for estates, hardship withdrawals and transfers abroad.
- **Trouble for investors outside the US.** Several reviewers say moving money out to a foreign bank took weeks or months, and a UK Reddit thread warns of similar trouble on the UK platform.

### Recently

- **July 2026:** a Trustpilot reviewer said customer service had got noticeably worse, and an r/Bogleheads thread weighed Vanguard's low costs against gaps such as no 24/7 support and no HSAs.
